Sicko: A Reader Calls on Integrator Readers for Comment and Review of Michael Moore's New Film PDF Print E-mail

A Sicko Forum: A Reader Asks Integrator Readers for Comments and Reviews of Michael Moore's New Film

Summary: The arrival of Michael Moore's documentary on the US medical system, Sicko, stimulated an Integrator reader, who saw the New York opening, to suggest that the Integrator be opened to "a few reviews from different perspectives." Good idea. Herewith, the Integrator kicks off a Sicko Forum. Send your one-liner, comment or review to Let's see what we are thinking about Moore's vision and its portrayal of the US healthcare system. Will Michael Moore be to the U.S. health care industry what author Upton Sinclair was to the Chicago meat-packing industry a century ago? Will life follow the movies?

Image Rumblings and links about Sicko, documentarist Michael Moore's new film on the United States health care system, began to reach me from Integrator readers a few weeks back. Integrator adviser Bill Manahan, MD, was one of the first. Others followed. The question percolated:
What value might the Integrator bring to the debate that is certain to be kicked off with the film's national opening in late June?
Then this morning Cathy Rogers, ND, a naturopathic physician who runs a beautiful, intimate naturopathic-spa practice on the shore of Puget Sound, sent me a note. She had attended the opening of Sicko in New York City on June 23th. Rogers - who as academic dean at Bastyr University in the 1980s developed the faculty and program which would be the first naturopathic medical education to gain federal recognition - wrote the following:
"On Saturday night in New York my sister Mary and I went to the opening of Sicko, Michael Moore’s editorial on American health care. It has more of a light touch than his other films, which makes the criminal behavior of insurance companies even more sickening. The human stories are so moving — sorrowful and unthinkable! What a great film — and shame on us.

"I thought of you as we walked out (in a crush of people craning their necks and raising their cell phone cameras to get a shot of MM’s red baseball cap). It would be great to see reviews of Sicko in the blog — not that I should write a review — but perhaps have a few reviews from different perspectives ..."

A Call to Readers for Your Comments and Reviews

Great idea, Cathy. While I haven't let Rogers' off the hook (I've asked her for her review), here is a call to all of you to send me your comments or reviews. Let them be one-liners or a paragraph or a 250 word column. Send them to me. We will see what this little community is thinking about when confronted with Moore's long-awaited work.

Meantime, Rogers did conclude with one choice opinion. I share here to get us going, though I have edited it a bit to reflect its
translation from personal email to blog-zone:
"Though only perspective to have is that America get it’s heart in the right place and depose the political-industrial (XXXXs) that run health care."
To which I add one comment of my own: Wouldn't it be like the United States to finally do something to address our shameful healthcare based on leadership not from politicians or the industry or the natural health and integrated care community, but from the movies? Will life follow the movies? Will Moore be to US healthcare what Upton Sinclair was for the meat-packing industry?
