Bezold/Alternative Futures Project Seeks Data on CAM for Disparity Reduction

Are there CAM approaches, methods or advances that can be significant in reducing health disparities? What is the literature on the experiences? How is your organization contributing? How might it?

These are core questions which Clem Bezold, PhD, puts to the CAM and integrative medicine communities as part of his broad, national project to reduce health disparities. The Disparity Reducing Advances Project (DRA Project) of the Institute for Alternative Futures has as its founding sponsor the National Cancer Institute and additional sponsorship from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. DRA Project goals include “accelerating health disparity reducing innovation” and “achieving health gains for the poor and underserved.”

The project is looking across the entire waterfront at potential sources of benefits. Early work has identified possible contributors ranging from genomics to medical records advances to the use of cell phones to cultural technologies to CAM. The working document states: “CAM approaches have proven cost effective for a range of specific indications including back pain; migraine headaches; some aspects of heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.” It concludes: “Both out of pocket, and ultimately reimbursed, CAM approaches may be relevant.” Interested organizations interested may become DRA Project project partners. 703-684-5880 www.altfutures.com

Comment: Bezold’s organization has consulted for three decades with leading agencies, organizations and governments internationally on their future visioning. Take a look at the web site. Bezold has been a visionary around CAM. His organization sponsored one of the first, respectful hearings on Capitol Hill in Washington DC about “alternative medicine,” in the late 1970s. Yes, 1970s. More recently he has facilitated such seminal gatherings as the National Policy Dialogue to Advance Integrated Health Care of the Integrated Healthcare Policy Consortium (for which his organization is a 501c3 charitable partner) and the Integrative Medicine Industry Leadership Summits (2000-2002). This is a tremendous opportunity to bring good CAM-IM practice into valuable play.
