The week of February
23, 2009 is promising to be the most significant policy week in the
history of complementary, alternative and particularly integrative
medicine. There will be a US Senate hearing on integrative medicine
principles on the 23rd, the sold-out IOM Summit on the 25th-27th and a
Samueli Institute reception on the 26th (sponsored with the Center for
Mind Body Medicine, Academic Consortium for Complementary and Alternative Health Care,
Integrated Healthcare Policy Consortium, and the Tai Sophia Institute.
Be there or be square. These actions comes amidst an economic stimulus
package, reported here, which includes $1 billion for a Wellness and
Prevention Fund and $1.1 billion for effectiveness research. Also noted
is a release from the American Chiropractic Association on
chiro-related issues in the stimulus package. More ...

Is relationship-centered care the critical element in the reform of
medicine? Tom Ballard, RN, ND doesn't think so. Ballard writes in
response to an Integrator column in which Stephen Bollles, DC, states: “What we do doesn't matter a whole lot compared to how we do it.” Ballard responds: "It's more than convincing
practitioners to spend quality time with patients. We need to radically change
the way medicine is practiced." Ballard
then presents his view of a "New Healthcare Paradigm" which is in fact
an "old" perspective inside his own profession. I wonder whether the
typical integrative medical doctor, or NCCAM researcher, would agree
that this is where the value in integrative practice will be found? More ...

James Gordon,
MD, past chair of the White House Commission on Complementary and
Alternative Medicine Policy, held a Healthcare Community Discussion on
December 30th. But anyone who knows Gordon's interests will guess that
he assembled a wide-ranging group, and that the recommendations ranged
as widely. They urge that the Department of Education become a central
agency in promotion and prevention. They would demote the "baleful
influence" of two key influencer-stakeholders. Got any guesses? On the research front, the group specifically suggests that up to 30%
of the research budget go to effectiveness studies, and 10% to
integrative approaches. The #1 recommendation is a general direction for health reform. Any guesses here? Gordon had the link sent to the Integrator for cross-posting. This is stimulating reading. More ...

The
healthcare career of Stephen Bolles, DC includes a director position
with the consumer division of United Healthcare, a vice presidency with
one of the emerging universities of natural health sciences and a
leadership role in establishing the integrative clinics at the renown
Woodwinds Health Campus in Minnesota. Here Bolles takes a look at the
emerging healthcare reform debate and asks 4 good questions, including
the ultimate economic challenge: "Who is not going to be doing
something that they are doing now?" He suggests one place where we
would be served to remain buoyed: relationships. But, Bolles askes, can
this system support the relationships that are critical to real change? More ...

The cult of
academics, conventional physicians and scientists who are dedicated to
polarizing the medical discussion by deriding all value in integrative
medicine and complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) practices has
mounted a nasty campaign against NIH NCCAM at Obama's change.gov site.
It is one-sided, and ugly. I am told the Obama site closes today.
Please get in immediately and register your vote in favor of continued
funding. If you can, add a comment to the blog. Act now, by going to this page at Obama's change.gov site. More info is available at the Integrator by clicking on the title of this article. Act now! Go to this site at Obama's change.gov to vote in the upper left corner of the blog. Then comment! More ...

Laura
Crites, MA, MS, executive director of the Hawaii Consortium for
Integrative Health Care, convened two Healthcare Community Discussions
as recommended by the Obama-Daschle healthcare transition team. Their
focus was specifically on the role of integrative medicine in
healthcare reform. The document they submitted to Obama-Daschle is
published here. It includes a half-dozen case histories, to ground the
importance of the document. These are followed by specific
recommendations in the areas of overall approach, research, education
and practice. How will these recommendations line up with what comes
out of the Bravewell-IOM Summit on February 25-27, 2009? More ...

On December 8, 2008, the Integrator
posted an invitation from Daphne White to join a Health Care Community
Discussion which she planned to host the next week. Such discussions
were urged by Tom Daschle, head of Obama's transition team for health
care. These discussion were created as a means of moving grassroots
ideas into the dialogue. White, a former journalist and health care
organizer, has a passion for integrative medicine as well as a
therapeutic touch practice. The subject for her group was the role of
integrative practices in health reform. Here is the submission that
came from that December 16th discussion. More ...

Integrator
adviser and columnist Michael Levin reports on a recent California
action, under Proposition 65, against 56 dietary supplement companies.
The issue is a level of lead in their products which required informing
their customers. Levin uses the column to remind clinicians and
administrators of the importance of vigilance of supplement
manufacturers about the extent of their quality control plans. The
story was brought to Levin's attention through Michael McGuffin and the
American Herbal Products Association. More ...

When past president of the American Holistic Medical Association Bill Manahan, MD received the list of the Integrator Top 10 from 2009, he was inspired to create a list of his own. Manahan, an Integrator
adviser and long-time member of the clinical faculty at the University
of Minnesota School of Medicine, offers what he calls "eight
transitions that will bring light and balance to healthcare." What are
your thoughts on these directions? More ...
