Professions & Associations
The
American Chiropractic Association and the Association of Chiropractic Colleges
are celebrating the advance of legislation (HR 5658)which, if passed, will make
chiropractic a standard benefit for all active duty military personnel ... A
recent newsletter of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians reports
that one outcome of the profession’s strongest lobbying event in Washington, DC. was that an Arizona
legislator reportedly embraced their School Wellth program, which seeks to
create partnerships for the health of school children, and may sponsor one in an
Arizona legislative district …
New employer services
The
American Herbal Products Association took a step toward supporting individuals
interested in working in the herbal products industry by creating a job board via
a partnership with CPGjobs. AHPA President Michael McGuffin states that “the
AHPA Job Board’s unique focus on herb-related career opportunities has always
made it a valuable resource for companies in the natural products industry” ... The American Holistic Nurses Association is celebrating the life of founder,
Charlie McGuire (1941-2008), who, according to a notice to members, “transitioned
from this life into the light early this morning May 15, 2008.” McGuire founded AHNA after a career in
nursing and work with a for-profit hospital company. AHNA notes that “realizing
that something was missing from her life, and disappointed with conventional
healthcare, she sent out a call to fellow nurses” in 1981. Seventy-six nurses showed
up and founded AHNA which now numbers 4,000 members in the US and abroad.
Acupuncturists Without Borders reports that it's Veterans' Project has now expanded into 15 Veterans clinics nationwide ... Speaking of acupuncturists in Veterans facilities, Jason Wright, LAc, shared with me recently that students and faculty in the acupuncture program at the New York Chiropractic College have piggy-backed onto that school's leading role in the chiropractic-VA program and are now offering some acupuncture services ...
Academics and Education The
International Association of Yoga Therapists engaged a survey of Yoga therapy
training programs as background to convening a historic meeting of these
program leaders in early March. The survey, headed up by Claire Collins, RN,
PhD, and IAYT’s executive director John Kepner, MBA is on their website. Most
schools have 300-450 hours ...Efrain Rodriguez, ND, sent a note which stated that “the
Puerto Rico Higher Education Council
(PRHEC) granted to Universidad del Turabo, Caguas, Puerto Rico a
license to offer a Doctoral Degree in Naturopathic Medicine” ... On May 15, 2008 the National Library of
Medicine informed the Journal of
Chiropractic Education that it has been included in PubMed Central, the
U.S. National Institutes of Health free digital archive of biomedical and life
sciences journal literature. The current, future, and, back issues of the JCE (since Fall 2006) are indexed in PubMed and available as free
full text files. Congrats to Bart Green, DC, MSEd, editor-in-chief and his team. JCE is funded through the Association of Chiropractic Colleges and is the only academic journal published through the complementary healthcare fields .. New integrative certificate programs - social work and pharmacy
The
Arizona State School of Social Work is offering a graduate certificate program
in the Assessment of Integrative Health Modalities. The 15 credit program
targets social workers and nurses. The stated purposed is “to provide students
with extensive knowledge of integrative health practices through directed
readings in evidenced-based journal articles, expert lectures from community
health professionals and ASU faculty drawn from across disciplines, field
observation, an individual research paper, and a mindfulness in-class practice
and class interaction which can enhance the quality and effectiveness of

According to program director Lana Dvorkin-Camiel, PharmD, starting this fall the Massachusetts College of
Pharmacy and Health Sciences has just had a new 9-month Graduate Certificate Program in Applied Natural Products approved by the Board of Trustees for the Fall 2008 implementation
date. The certificate expands on the region’s first Master of
Applied Natural Products (MANP) Degree program. The certificate program consists of 3 courses in herbal and dietary supplements and functional medicine and aims to "enable practitioners to develop basic
clinical skills in the area of natural products"
Research
The
Palmer Center for Chiropractic Research (PCCR) has received an award to
establish a four-year, multidisciplinary Developmental Center for Clinical and
Translational Science in Chiropractic from the National Center for
Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM). According to the Palmer release, the first year of the grant
award is funded at $148,435, with the remaining $2.6 million to be awarded
following successful completion of year one planning efforts. Christine Goetz
Choate, DC, PhD is the principal investigator on the grant ... Reed B. Phillips, DC, PhD, retired president
of Southern California University of Health Sciences and a noted chiropractic educator
and researcher, was named to serve as the new director of international
programs and research development for the Foundation for Chiropractic Education
and Research (FCER) … Hospitals & Health Systems
The
Institute for Family-Centered Care announced in a May 22, 2008 release that it is partnering
with the Samueli Institute, headed by Wayne Jonas, MD, for the May 27-30, 2008
Intensive Training Seminar, Hospitals and Communities Moving Forward with
Patient- and Family-Centered Care, in Bethesda, MD. The move marks another
extension of Samueli’s Optimal Healing Environments initiative …Belleruth Naparstek, PhD, writes in a Health Journeys newsletter that Mayo Clinic has "sprinted far ahead of most" hospitals and health systems in the embrace of mind-body therapies despite being "late in coming on board" ... Sita Ananth, MHA, in her regular column in the American Hospital Association'sHospitals and Health Networkswrites on some initiatives in which hospitals are using CAM in treating chronic conditions ...
Business
Medfinds, a website and service led by Andrew
Brandeis, ND (cand.) reports that the service is currently populated with 4306
practitioners, a 7th of which (602) are naturopathic doctors. The Medfinds team is also working on a provider referral network
program, that supports Medfinds practitioners choosing other practitioners they
would recommend … Also on the web front, Taylor Walsh reports that two new-old sites have recently come online, AltMD and The Holistic Option. Walsh notes that "both
have built pretty substantial content bases on therapies and conditions, and
have what purports to be 'find a local practitioner' sections of
varying completeness" ...The American Botanical Council reported in its most recent HerbalGram that total sales of herbal dietary supplements within all
sales channels of the US market reached approximately $4,791,000,000 in 2007, a 4.4% increase over 2006. The 4 page report was provided in collaboration with Nutrition Business Journal.
